Learning to Listen

Listening is one of the most powerful ways we can show love and care for others. This week, focus on practicing active listening in your conversations. Often, we’re so eager to respond or share our own thoughts that we fail to truly listen to what others are saying. But when we listen attentively, without interruption or judgment, we create space for deeper understanding and stronger connections.

James 1:19 encourages us, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Active listening means being fully present in the moment, putting aside distractions, and focusing on the person speaking. It involves not only hearing their words but also understanding their emotions and intentions. When we listen well, we make the other person feel valued and heard, fostering trust and respect in our relationships.

As you engage with others this week, allow them to express their thoughts and feelings without rushing to respond or offer solutions. Sometimes, people simply need to be heard, and your attentiveness can make all the difference. Proverbs 18:13 reminds us, “To answer before listening—that is folly and shame.” By taking the time to truly hear someone, you open the door for empathy and compassion to flourish.

Listening also gives us an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love. Jesus was known for His ability to listen to others, to hear their hearts, and to offer comfort and guidance. In Luke 8:43-48, when a woman who had been suffering for years touched Jesus’ cloak, He stopped and listened to her story, acknowledging her pain and offering healing. In our conversations, we can reflect this same Christlike attentiveness, showing people that they matter to us and to God.

This week, challenge yourself to practice active listening. Put down your phone, make eye contact, and focus fully on the person in front of you. Allow them to share their thoughts and feelings without interruption. In doing so, you’ll deepen your connections with others and reflect God’s love through the simple but profound act of truly hearing someone.
