Asking God for boldness is a transformative prayer that allows you to step beyond fear and hesitation, empowering you to share your faith with confidence and authenticity. It’s not just about being fearless—it’s about trusting God to work through you as you respond to His call to spread the Gospel. By seeking boldness, you align yourself with God’s purpose and experience a deepening of your faith as you walk in obedience.
For Derek, a college student, sharing his faith was something he admired in others but struggled with personally. He loved Jesus and wanted others to know Him, but the thought of talking about his beliefs made his palms sweat. Derek feared rejection, judgment, or simply saying the wrong thing. He often told himself, I’ll share my faith when I feel ready, but that day never seemed to come.
One evening, while attending a campus ministry event, the speaker told the story of Peter and John from Acts 4. After healing a man in Jesus’ name, Peter and John were brought before the Sanhedrin and commanded to stop speaking about Jesus. Instead of backing down, they prayed for boldness to continue proclaiming the Gospel. “And now, Lord,” they prayed, “look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness” (Acts 4:29). Their courage stirred something in Derek.
The speaker ended with a challenge: “When was the last time you prayed for boldness? Not for an easier path, not for people to come to you, but for the courage to step out in faith and share Jesus with those who need Him?”
Derek felt the conviction immediately. That night, he prayed earnestly, “Lord, I’m scared. I don’t know what to say, and I don’t want to mess it up. But I want to obey You. Please give me boldness to share my faith. Help me trust You.”
The very next day, an opportunity arose. Derek was sitting with his friend Kyle in the cafeteria when the conversation turned serious. Kyle admitted he’d been feeling lost and overwhelmed lately, unsure about his purpose in life. Derek’s heart pounded. He recognized this as a moment God had prepared, but fear crept in. What if Kyle thought he was weird? What if he asked a question Derek couldn’t answer?
Silently, Derek prayed again. Lord, give me boldness. Speak through me. Then, with a deep breath, he said, “Kyle, I don’t have all the answers, but I know what’s helped me when I’ve felt like that. My faith in Jesus has given me direction and peace. Can I share more about that with you?”
To Derek’s surprise, Kyle didn’t react negatively. Instead, he nodded, and they spent the next hour talking about faith, hope, and God’s love. Derek didn’t have all the perfect words, but he shared his story honestly. Kyle didn’t make a decision that day, but he thanked Derek for the conversation and expressed interest in learning more.
That experience marked a turning point for Derek. He realized that sharing his faith wasn’t about being perfect or having all the answers—it was about being available and willing. Each time he prayed for boldness, he felt a little less fear and a lot more faith. God’s presence became tangible as Derek stepped out of his comfort zone.
Over time, Derek began to see sharing his faith as a natural part of his relationships. Whether it was a quick comment about how God was working in his life or an invitation to a church event, Derek found ways to plant seeds of faith. His boldness grew as he witnessed the impact those moments had on others. Some asked deeper questions. Others thanked him for his honesty. A few even joined him at Bible studies, eager to explore their own spiritual journeys.
Of course, not every encounter went smoothly. Derek faced skepticism, awkward silences, and even outright rejection. But instead of being discouraged, he took those moments to God in prayer, asking for strength and wisdom. Each challenge deepened his dependence on God and reminded him that boldness wasn’t about results—it was about obedience.
Derek’s journey mirrors the experiences of many believers who have prayed for boldness and stepped out in faith. When you ask God for courage to share your faith, you invite Him to work through your weaknesses. His Spirit equips you with the words, timing, and compassion needed to connect with others. Boldness isn’t about being loud or forceful; it’s about being authentic, intentional, and sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
The Apostle Paul often prayed for boldness, even as a seasoned evangelist. In Ephesians 6:19-20, he asked the church to pray “that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel.” Paul’s example shows that even the most confident messengers of Christ rely on God’s strength to overcome fear.
Praying for boldness is transformative because it shifts the focus from your limitations to God’s limitless power. It reminds you that the Gospel is not about you—it’s about Jesus. This perspective takes the pressure off, freeing you to share your faith with humility and trust.
If you’re hesitant to share your faith, start by asking God for boldness. Pray specifically for opportunities to share and for the courage to seize them. Be honest with God about your fears and trust Him to guide you. As you take small steps of obedience, your confidence will grow, and you’ll experience the joy of partnering with God in His work.
Remember, boldness doesn’t mean you’ll never feel nervous or unsure. It means you choose to act in faith despite those feelings. And as you do, you’ll see how God uses your willingness to impact lives and strengthen your own faith. Sharing your faith isn’t just about reaching others—it’s also about deepening your relationship with the One who calls you to go.
