The Dangers of Pride by Pastor Adama Segbedji
Proverbs 16:18: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall…”
INTRODUCTION: THE SILENT DESTROYER
Pride is a silent killer in the spirit. It is deceptive, subtle, and often goes unnoticed until it causes irreversible damage. Many destinies have been cut short, not because of demonic attack, but because of pride left unchecked.
Pride says:
-
“I don’t need help.”
-
“I’m better than others.”
-
“I did this on my own.”
-
“Even God should be grateful I serve Him.”
But God’s Word is clear: He resists the proud.
But God’s Word is clear: He resists the proud.
James 4:6: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Where there is pride, God withdraws His grace. Where there is humility, God pours out more grace.
7 DANGERS OF PRIDE
1️⃣ Pride Separates You from God
Pride is spiritual arrogance that places you in direct opposition to God. It creates a wall between you and divine intervention.
📖 Isaiah 59:2: “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.”
📝 Example: Saul, the first king of Israel, disobeyed God and tried to justify himself instead of repenting. His pride led to his rejection.
📖 1 Samuel 15:23: “Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He has also rejected you from being king.”
2️⃣ Pride Caused the First Fall – Lucifer’s Fall
Pride was the first sin ever committed—not on Earth, but in Heaven. Lucifer, once a glorious angel, was cast down because of pride.
📖 Isaiah 14:13–15: “I will ascend… I will exalt my throne… I will be like the Most High…”
📝 Lesson: If pride brought down an archangel in Heaven, it can bring down anyone on earth—regardless of position, title, or influence.
3️⃣ Pride Precedes Shame and Public Humiliation
Pride opens the door for public disgrace. It may camouflage as confidence, but its fruit is always shame when God steps in.
📖 Proverbs 11:2: “When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom.”
📝 Example: King Uzziah became strong and proud—then entered the temple unlawfully. He was struck with leprosy (📖 2 Chronicles 26:16–21).
4️⃣ Pride Hinders Spiritual Growth and Breakthrough
A proud heart resists correction, rejects wisdom, and stifles development. It stops you from learning and evolving.
📖 Proverbs 26:12: “Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”
📝 Example: The Pharisees were too proud to receive Jesus, even though they knew the Scriptures. Pride blinded them from seeing the Truth.
5️⃣ Pride Blocks Access to Divine Help
God says in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray…” That means pride blocks prayer.
📖 Psalm 10:4: “The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.”
📝 Lesson: If your heart is lifted up, your prayer will be cast down. Humility is the ladder that lifts your prayers into Heaven’s throne room.
6️⃣ Pride Invites Divine Judgment
God will always bring down the proud. Whether it takes a day or a decade, divine judgment comes.
📖 Daniel 4:30–33 – Nebuchadnezzar said, “Is this not Babylon that I have built by my mighty power?” Immediately he was struck down and lived like a beast.
📖 Daniel 4:37: “Those who walk in pride He is able to put down.”
📝 Lesson: No man can take God’s glory and escape judgment.
7️⃣ Pride Destroys Relationships and Unity
Pride is the breeding ground of arguments, bitterness, rebellion, and division. Pride turns friends into enemies and churches into battlegrounds.
📖 Proverbs 13:10: “By pride comes nothing but strife…”
📝 Lesson: Marriages break because of pride. Ministries split because of pride. Nations collapse because of pride. But humility builds and heals.
💎 HOW TO OVERCOME PRIDE
1. Stay in God’s Word
The Word of God is a mirror. The more you stay in it, the more you see who you really are.
📖 Hebrews 4:12
2. Be Accountable
Surround yourself with godly mentors who can speak truth and correction into your life.
3. Serve Others
Jesus washed His disciples’ feet. True greatness is found in service.
📖 John 13:14–15
4. Give God All the Glory
Every promotion, every miracle, every testimony must be returned to God in thanksgiving.
📖 1 Corinthians 4:7: “What do you have that you did not receive?”
5. Pray for a Humble Spirit
Ask the Holy Spirit daily: “Lord, keep me broken before You.”
CONFESSION:
🟩 “I reject every form of pride in my heart, in my words, and in my actions. I humble myself under the mighty hand of God. I give glory to God for every blessing and honour. Pride shall not have dominion over me. I will walk in humility, wisdom, and grace, and God will lift me in due time in Jesus’ name!”
FINAL WARNING FROM GOD’S SERVANT, PASTOR ADAMA SEGBEDJI:
“Pride is not just a sin—it is a spiritual cancer that eats away at your destiny. It disconnects you from God, from people, and from your purpose. If you want to rise, go low before God. If you want to see promotion, embrace humility. God cannot use a vessel that is full of itself. Let pride die today, so your purpose can live.”
ALTAR CALL:
If pride has been hiding in any area of your life—your achievements, titles, appearance, intellect, or even in your spiritual walk—now is the time to repent. Come back to Jesus in humility and watch Him lift you beyond limits.
